The Muncie Central baseball team got back to its winning ways Wednesday with a 9-2 victory over Winchester at Bottorff Field.
The Bearcats (3-4) had both strong hitting and pitching in the game.
Central had 11 hits in the victory, led by senior Michael Harrold, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. He narrowly missed his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth, when he stroked a hard line drive off the very top of the fence in right field.
Senior Kevin Robertson also had two hits and two RBIs for the Bearcats.
Senior Josh Mawhorr got the win on the mound to improve to 2-1 on the season. On a limited pitch count, Mawhorr went three innings and gave up just two hits and two runs – one earned – while striking out six batters and walking two.
Harrold came on in relief and also went three innings for the Bearcats, giving up just one hit and striking out seven Golden Falcon batters. He walked one. Sophomore Billy Walker came on in the seventh and had a 1-2-3 inning, striking out one.
The game ended with an exclamation point in the top of the seventh when, with one out, Winchester’s Brian Friend popped an 0-0 pitch from Central’s Walker down the left field line.
That’s when Robertson, after a very long run, caught the ball as he crashed through the gate. He held on for the second out of the inning; the gate, meanwhile, is in need of repair.
Central returns to play Saturday as it takes part in its annual overnight trip to the Columbus East Invitational. The Bearcats, as usual, will play East Central in the second game of the day. The winner of the Central/East Central game advances to the championship game against the winner of Columbus East/Greenwood.
