Central splits games at Blackford Invitational

The Muncie Central baseball team played two completely different types of games Saturday, splitting their games in the Blackford Invitational. Central (2-3) lost 14-9 to Wes-Del in the opener -- a game in which the Bearcats committed six errors -- but came back to defeat the host Bruins 10-4 in the nightcap.

The Bearcats (1-3) committed six errors in the loss, while Bearcat pitchers walked a total of nine batters.
The Warriors opened the game in the second inning by sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs.
For Central, senior Josh Mawhorr hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field in the top of the first inning. Senior Kevin Robertson came on to relieve Mawhorr on the mound with one out in the top of the second and proceeded to throw 4 2/3 innings while giving up no earned runs and striking out eight Warrior batters.
The loss for the Bearcats meant they played host Blackford in the consolation matchup of the invitational. The Bruins lost their opening game to Wabash.

Central rebounded from a tough opening loss in the Blackford Invitational with a 10-4 win over the host Bruins in the consolation game.
The Bearcats (2-3) had an all-around effort on the diamond against Blackford.
On offense, Central had 14 hits, led by freshman Jordan Poore, who went 4-for-5 with a double and his first career home run. Five other Bearcats had multiple-hit efforts at the dish, including Blake Bullock (who had two doubles), Mawhorr (who hit his second home run of the tournament), Michael Harrold (who hit a triple and a home run), Robertson and Brannon Muncey.
Pitching-wise, Harrold was in control for nearly the entire game. The senior gave up no earned runs while striking out 10 Bruin batters in six innings.

The Bearcats return to action Monday as they play host to Jay County at Bottorff Field.
